Colloidal alumina /alumina sols
What is Alumina Sol?
Alumina Sol (Al₂O₃ Sol) is produced by controlled hydrolysis and condensation reactions, allowing aluminum ions to form tiny particles typically ranging from 5–100 nm in size in a liquid phase. Electrostatic repulsion or surface modification maintains a stable dispersion over time. It is also a ready-to-use liquid material. It is easy to apply and has good fluidity, making it suitable for spraying and brushing. It is also used in refractory and high-temperature coatings. Environmentally friendly and safe, it is a water-based system and contains no volatile organic solvents.
What are the differences between alumina sol and alumina dispersion?
In terms of particle formation, alumina sol produces nanoparticles in situ through hydrolysis, while alumina dispersions are formed by dry powder dispersion and dispersant stabilization. The stabilization mechanisms are also different. Alumina sol is primarily driven by electrostatic repulsion, while alumina dispersions rely on dispersants and surface modification to maintain stability. Particle size is also naturally different: alumina sol is typically 5–50 nm (often smaller), while alumina dispersions are typically 20–100 nm. Applications also differ: alumina sol is primarily used in refractory coatings, catalysts, and binders, while alumina dispersions are used in lithium battery separators, thermal interface materials, and coatings. The fixed content differs little: alumina sol is 10%–30%, while alumina dispersions can reach 10%–50%. In short, alumina sol is an in-situ generated nano-alumina colloidal system, while nano-alumina dispersions are prepared by physically and chemically dispersing existing dry powder into a liquid.
KOSNANO offer high quality Alumina sol, which has a highly stable nano-alumina colloid with advantages such as small particle size, excellent dispersibility, strong adhesion, and high-temperature resistance.
It is a core material form in high-end applications such as refractory coatings, lithium battery ceramic separators, and catalyst supports.
Compared to traditional dry powders, alumina sol significantly simplifies customer processes and reduces dispersion steps, making it an ideal solution for future high-end material applications.
